About Gene Jaress
I have been a working artist over the past 50 years. I am currently working on woodblock prints, a couple of paintings, and have half a dozen other projects in mind. The light and atmospheric conditions created by the Salish Sea, Skagit Valley and Mount Cultus looming to the east influence my work, whether it be painting, woodblock prints, or sculpture. My background in sculpture also informs that work, as I think in three dimensions when I am composing art, whatever form it will take. The other essential dimension is meticulous craftsmanship from beginning to end to create a quality piece of art.
"Without craftsmanship inspiration
is a mere reed shaken in the wind".

I believe the frame of any work of art is an important part of the whole piece. Recently I completed this frame for Smoke at Sunrise. I used black walnut and box joints for a floated canvas frame. It turned out well and the warm wood tones and patterns complement those in the painting.
I am working on the latest woodblock print in the Skagit Valley Woodblock Series. This one in progress is a version of my painting Winter Light on Mount Cultus.
