Autumn in Skagit County brings the sounds of trumpeter swans to Barney Lake, just northeast of our home. Hundreds fly over every day November to March back and forth to the fields. On clear days, after the sun has risen high enough, they appear yellow against the blue sky, flying low enough to hear the whoosh of wings and see the wing feather pattern.
Another landmark close by is Big Rock, looming above the intersection of Highway 9 and College Way just past the eastern edge of Mount Vernon city limits. It's visible from several miles around the Nookachamps Valley, and is an important part of indigenous legend. In 2015 I painted Big Rock in Winter, followed a few years later with a woodblock print showing a summer view. We got to climb Big Rock a few weeks ago, and the views were incredible. This fall when I sell a framed print of Big Rock, I am going to donate all the proceeds and also10% of unframed Big Rock print sales to Skagit Land Trust. They have a December deadline to achieve the goal of protecting and enhancing access the Big Rock area for years to come. Information about this project is in this link. Contact me at [email protected] if you live in the northwest and might be interested in a framed copy. Otherwise, look at the website for an unframed copy.
The summer was spent working on My Plum Tree, which is now showing at the Jansen Art Center in the Fall Juried Exhibit, at the Lido Collective, and will be in the Art's Alive show in La Conner. The back story to My Plum Tree is that by 1910 there were many Italians living in the Mount Baker district of Seattle. Our house had not only beautiful Italian tile work, but a mature Italian plum tree in the back yard which gave us many years of blossoms followed by plums and prunes. On the print, the flower pistils and stamens were all done by hand.
I bought a small press to be able to make small pieces and am also teaching my little apprentice the beginnings of printmaking, which is both rewarding and an exercise in patience - for both of us. Small works will be featured at the Matzke Fine Art Gallery in Honey I Shrunk the Art from Nov 25 - January 28, open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday 11-5, opening party November 25, 4:30-7:30.
Sooner, come visit the Rexville Grange Art Show. The grange was built in 1927 by volunteers, and the art show is fun, showing quality eclectic art in a truly community setting. This show will be November 10-12 and 18-19 from 10-5 each day. The opening party is November 9 from 5-8pm.
That's it for now.

Hello all,
Just a brief note on what's happening at 12 Crows Studio this summer. First a note about the image - My Plum Tree - work in progress. At the NW Art Beat Studio Tour, this is the featured part of the display in the print studio.
The NW Art Beat Studio Tour is happening today and tomorrow. Guides are available many places and the website does a great job giving information on the tour. There are 19 artists in 15 studios showing in western Skagit county. I will be showing people how the woodcut process works in my backyard studio, and then head over to the prints hung in the house, and the front room studio where the design process begins.
I have two pieces at the Schack Art Center in Everett at the 23rd Juried Competition. The Wind in the Old Tree won an honorable mention. They have a printmaking studio there, as well as clay, glass, jewelry, and a number of other classes. The show goes until August 26.
I have a dozen pieces at the Matzke Fine Art Gallery and Sculpture Park. The Summer Moments show runs until August 18. The interior design of the gallery has great light and sight lines. Allow time to wander through the 10 acres of sculptures in the woods. It's really a remarkable place. It's open Friday to Sunday, from 11-5, or by appointment.
July 29 is a busy day for me. I am helping coordinate the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Artists meet up event at the house of the group's historian Brom Wikstrom. He has an interesting art collection. Members will meet there and may also go out for plein air painting, and possibly visit the Arts at the Port Juried exhibition opening.
The Anacortes Arts festival with the juried exhibit Arts at the Port opens with a reception on Saturday, July 29 from 5:30-8pm. I had two pieces accepted to the show. Hours also include Monday July 31– Thursday August 3 of Festival week from 10am to 4pm, and during Festival Hours August 4 – 6. It's always a fun show. Side note - I enjoy seeing the water through the floor boards of the pier.
You can now order a print online at the 12 Crows Studio website. We are selling the prints unframed, and including recommendations for matting and framing.
That's it for now. Feel free to contact me any time. Thanks for your time.

SPRING 2023 NEWSLETTER
Greetings friends,
A lot has happened in the last year. In August I bought a new press and now am able to have all my printmaking in one building, one room for carving, the other for printing. My beginning in printmaking started in high school, so it's come a long way. I owe a debt of gratitude to all those that helped me get here - Conrad Machine, Acuity Paper, McClain's Printmaking Supplies, everyone at Tri-Dee Arts, fellow artists and galleries, my customers and friends, my little apprentice, of course my family and let's not forget the dogs!
I have been showing at the Lido Collective in downtown Mount Vernon since last April. This non-profit arts shop sponsored by the Mount Vernon Downtown Association is a great addition to downtown.
In September I joined the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Artists, was in their fall show at the Matzke Gallery on Camano Island, and in March they accepted me as a signature artist. You can see some of my work in their Savor Online gallery, and I have a piece in the current Light and Renewal show at Blakely Hall in Issaquah.
Tonight the Rexville Grange Art Show begins with an opening party. This event is always fun, with quality art. It runs until April 16, the height of the Skagit tulip viewing season. My four panels are hung with prints and ready to go.
Within the next week, the new banners from the Mount Vernon Arts Commission contest will be hung along the Mount Vernon Riverwalk. I'm happy to say that five of them are my images. The riverwalk has done a lot for the Mount Vernon and Skagit County community, and is a great place for art.
Next Thursday is the opening for the Jansen Art Center's spring show. My show is called Skagit Valley in Color and will be in the Fine Arts Gallery on the main floor. The show will be up until July 7. The Jansen does a lot for the arts and the community, and I am proud to show there.
The third weekend of July brings the Northwest Art Beat Studio Tour, a chance to visit my studio in Mount Vernon and others in Skagit County. I will also have two pieces in the Anacortes Arts Festival juried show, Arts at the Port, at the end of July into August.
That's it for now. I hope to see you at some of these events. If you want to contact me, there is an email button on my website, and also a contact form to join the quarterly newsletter. We are making the website ready to sell prints online - just prints, not framed.
Thanks for your presence, feel free to share this.
